Using Oregano Oil for Sinus Congestion

Oregano Oil is a powerful, natural antibacterial remedy that has helped me battle the toughest cold and sinus congestion this last week. I could feel my sinuses start to clear less than 24 hours after I took my first dose!

This last month I've been battling major sinus congestion. I was using my neti pot to help clear out some gunk, but because I wasn't resting enough my body was not able to fight off this cold very well. I was getting pretty frustrated because everyone else in the family was feeling better but me. Plus I was getting SO far behind in creating for our Etsy shop and blogging because I was feeling so yucky.

Last week at my part time job in town, a coworker mentioned that her naturopath suggested she take Oregano Oil for sinus congestion. She had positive results and did not need to take antibiotics like she had before for chronic sinus issues. I was desperate to try anything so I figured I would give it a try. I picked up some oregano oil at the local health food store. I opted for the oil to mix in with water to take rather than capsules since I have always had a difficult time swallowing pills. Plus it was the most cost effective option since I was buying just the oil that would last a lot longer than a bottle of capsules with a small amount of oil in each one.

After a day of taking the powerful Oregano Oil, I could feel my sinuses start to clear. Over the last week of taking oregano oil two times per day, I am feeling so much better. I have a lot less congestion and my body feels stronger. I am simply amazed at how well the oregano oil naturally helped to fight the gunk that had settled into my sinuses!

Since I had not heard of using Oregano Oil for sinus congestion before, I did a little research to find out more about this amazing herbal remedy.  Here are a few key bits of information if you are interested in trying oregano oil:
  • Oregano contains a naturally occurring anti-bacterial agent called Carvacrol
  •  The higher the percentage of Carvacrol in the oil the better (most Oregano Oils sold in liquid or capsule form are labeled with their percent)
  • Oregano Oil comes in capsule or liquid form
  • Capsules and the liquid are slightly diluted with a carrier oil (most often olive oil)
  • Oregano Oil comes in a glass bottle with a dropper which LOOKS like an essential oil but most of them are not. If using a pure essential oil, make sure it is food grade.
  • Oregano Oil is very strong and can cause a burning sensation (which is why a lot of folks opt for capsules)
  • Oregano Oil is not recommended for women who are pregnant.
 How to Use Oregano Oil
Since the Oregano Oil is so strong, are you curious how I manage to take the liquid? Well, it was a learning experience! The first couple times I took it, I mixed 2-3 drops of oil in a cup of water, stirred it well and sipped it. Since oil and water do not mix well, the last sip was VERY potent and mostly just Oregano Oil. Wow, did my throat burn! I figured out after that a much easier way to take it.

Now I put a very small amount of water in a glass, drop in 2-3 drops of Oregano Oil, mix well, quickly swallow the mixture and immediately drink a large glass of water to wash it all down.

Oregano Oil is now a part of our herbal medicine cabinet to be used as a natural antibacterial remedy. I also read that Oregano Oil can be used to treat a wide variety of other ailments such as allergies, asthma, urinary tract infections, heartburn, and topically as an insect repellent to name a few. This stuff is amazing!

Have you ever used Oregano Oil?

  3. Oregano oil is what got us through our colds/flu! I use DoTerra Essential Oils, and nothing worked well until I started adding Oregano to the mix. Within a day we were all feeling much better! Email me at baxie22@yahoo.com if you are interested in trying any DoTerra products, or learning more information.

    Great post!

    1. No experience with that one Tamara, my daughter is only 18 months old so I'm not sure how I'd get her to take it :)

  6. If I were using it with kids I would be sure to dilute it. You can add a couple drops into a cup of epsom salt and then dissolve that into a bath or put 2-4 drops into an ounce of healthy oil (olive oil is great) and mix well and rub it into their back or chest. Try just a little bit on kids at first (or anyone) until you know how they will react!

I love this post! Oregano is so strong against so many bugs and it's yucky.

  9. I have not tried oregano oil, but am very interested to try it as everyone in the family has allergies and my wife gets too many sinus infections and her doctors are trying to limit the number of times she goes on antibiotics. Thanks!

  10. I find it easiest to get over the taste of the oil in liquid form by just dropping it direct into my mouth and chugging water or orange juice after it. You will get the taste, but you won't waste any of the oil (it can stick to the glass as it won't mix with water), and you get it over with fast. After a while you do get past the intensity, and then it won't seem as horrible each time you use it. Watch out though, you may wind up with some very strong oregano burps after the fact.
